New Delhi, October 7 (IANS): Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Thursday issued a show cause notice with a fine of Rs 5 lakh to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited after the private company was found in violation of established 14-point guidelines by the Delhi government to control dust pollution in the nation’s capital.
“We had learned of L & T’s negligence around the tunnel they are building at Pragati Maidan. I visited the site myself to take stock of the situation and found a flagrant violation of the guidelines,” said Rai. after a surprise visit to Pragati. Maidan tunnel construction site Thursday afternoon.
“There is dust all around. The tarp net was only put in place for the show, either partially or completely ripped. The smog gun doesn’t even have water in it. this shows how they don’t care a bit about the standards. We are sending L&T today a notice of justification with a penalty of Rs 5 lakh and if we do not get a satisfactory answer quickly we will take strict measures against them. If they do not comply within two days, then they will have to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh per day “, added the minister.
The Delhi government on Thursday launched an online portal for construction and demolition (C&D) waste management in the nation’s capital allowing construction agencies to self-audit. This is part of the anti-dust campaign of the government led by the Aam Aadmi party.
As part of the campaign, the Delhi government has made it mandatory for private and government construction agencies to follow the 14-point guidelines that will prevent dust pollution in the city.
The 14-point guidelines include the placement of wind / dust walls of an appropriate height around the periphery of the site, the installation of anti-smog guns for more than 20,000 m² of built-up area, -dust along with arrangements for medical help, investigation and treatment for each construction worker working on the site.
